China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) is located in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, a historical and cultural city with charms of ancient Chu State and Han Dynasty, sharing magnificent beauties of the North and the South. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, listed in the national “211 Project” and “985 Project” of Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines, and is one of the national “Double World-class Constructing Universities”.
Since its founding in 1909, CUMT has gone through more than a hundred years of hardships. After 14 re-locations and 12 re-names, though it has been displaced and subjected to endless difficulties, it persists in spreading its brightness and intoning its songs from generation to generation. As the only high-level university in the country named after mining industry, through long-term development and construction, it has formed a multi-disciplinary structure with engineering as its mainstay, mining as its characteristic, coordinated with the development of science, engineering, management and liberal arts. It has formed advantageous brands and distinctive features in the fields of energy exploration and utilization, resources, environment and production, as well as other related disciplines like mining construction, safety engineering, surveying, machinery, information technology, ecological restoration, and management engineering.
CUMT offers 67 undergraduate programs, 33 first-level master programs, 18 professional degree programs, 17 first-level doctoral programs, and 16 centers for post-doctoral studies. It owns 1 first-level national key discipline, 8 national key disciplines, 1 national key (nurturing) discipline; 8 disciplines hiring special-term professors of “Chang Jiang Scholars Program”; 6 project disciplines under “Advantageous Discipline Construction Program in Jiangsu Universities”. In the 2017 discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education, Mining Engineering, Safety Science and Engineering entered A+; Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering entered A-. 7 disciplines of Engineering, Earth Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environment and Ecology, and Computer Technology have ranked the top 1% of ESI in universities and research institutions around the world. Among them, engineering discipline has entered the top 1 ‰ of ESI in the world.
The university owns a high-level faculty with more than 3,200 staff members. Among the 1989 odd full-time teachers include 486 professors, 862 associate professors; 473 of them are supervisors for PhD students, 1387 supervisors for post-graduates, and more than 81% of teachers with doctoral degrees. CUMT has 16 academicians of the two Academies (including those engaged by external units), as well as one academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering. 19 people are selected for the "Chang Jiang Scholars" award program, and 16 people get “The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”. There are 4 national teaching teams, 3 innovative research groups sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation, and 4 innovation teams by the Ministry of Education.
CUMT has always adhered to the concept of cultivating high-quality talents with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, innovation, and practical ability. Since its inception, CUMT has produced more than 200,000 talented graduates for the country and society. The university has been named both as the “National and Provincial Advanced Unit for Graduate Employment” and the “Model School for Entrepreneurship Education in Jiangsu Province”. In 2012, it was entitled as the “National Advanced Unit of Graduate Employment” by the State Council. At present, the university holds more than 23,600 full-time undergraduate students, more than 14,300 post-graduates and PhD students, as well as 750 odd international students.
Long and far as its history, the efforts made are witnessed and credited. In the new era, CUMT is undertaking a “three-step” development strategy, ie, the first is to perfect its distribution of discipline development, and by 2020, strive to bring CUMT as a whole close to the level of world-class mining universities; the second step is to build CUMT into a world-class mining university by 2030; the third step is to bring the university into a world-class university featured in energy resources by the mid-century, which is the ultimate goal of the "three-step" development.
