Under the organization and management of university authorities, international students can use their spare time to obtain remuneration by working through legal channels and spend it on practical activities for the improvement of their study and living conditions. In principle, any work-study program, either on or off campus, shall not exceed 8 hours per week and 40 hours per month. During the winter and summer vacations, in principle, it shall not exceed 16 hours per week and 80 hours per month.
For international students, the positions provided for work-study programs should primarily fall into the categories of teaching assistants, research assistants, administration assistants, and public services on campus. The positions should both meet the students’ needs and occupy only their spare time. The payment of on-campus programs is arranged by universities: Permanent posts are paid by month; while temporary posts are paid by hour. The hourly remuneration can be reasonably determined with reference to the minimum hourly wage standard stipulated by the local people's government where the university is located.
Work-study is paid according to the following standards: the remuneration for 40 working hours per month, in principle, shall not be lower than the minimum subsistence allowance for local residents and may fluctuate appropriately.

Any international student who seeks to participate in work-study activities off campus shall:
(a) Be at least 18 years of age, and satisfy the physical conditions required for work-study positions;
(b) Hold a valid residence permit for education purpose in China, which remains valid six months or above;
(c) Abide by Chinese laws and regulations and campus rules, be well-behaved with good moral characters, and have no record of crimes and violations;
(d) Be an undergraduate, postgraduate, visiting student, or research scholar who has been studying in the current school for more than one year;
(e) Meet the university’s requirements for academic progress and attendance;
(f) Meet other conditions stipulated by the university. -
The university shall cancel an international student’s qualification for work-study and report to the exit/entry administration of the public security authority in time, if:
(a) The student finishes schooling, finishes schooling without degree, temporarily suspends one’s schooling, or drops out of school;
(b) The student violates national laws and regulations or relevant administrative provisions of the university;
(c) The student has poor moral characters and behaves against public orders and social customs, which causes ill effects;
(d) There are other circumstances in which the university has decided that it is no longer appropriate to continue the work-study program. For example, the work has affected the study. According to Article 14, if the position under work-study program for international students has a larger scope of duties and longer working hours, the exit/entry administration of the public security authority will investigate and deal with it according to the law. -
