Nanjing Vocational Institute of Railway Technology (NVIRT) is a full-time state-run polytechnic. It is located in the hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta with the most developed economy and the highest level of railway development in China, and a historical and cultural city--Nanjing. Founded in 1941, the institute has a reputation for cultivating a large number of outstanding railway technology and management talents.
The institute has seven secondary schools, namely the School of Transportation Management, the School of Communication and Signaling, the School of Rolling Stock and Vehicles, the School of Power Supply and Engineering, the School of Finance and Logistics Management, the School of Intelligent Engineering, the School of Architecture, Art and Design. There are six teaching departments, e.g. the School of Marxist and the School of International Education. It has opened majors in Operation and Management of Railway Transportation, High-speed EMU Maintenance Technology, Accounting, Animation Design and Production for the rail transit industry and the regional economy.
The institute has continuously deepened the integration of production and education, school-enterprise cooperation, and the institute has received strong support from the government, industry and enterprises. The institute has cooperated with various railway enterprises to build a high-speed railway teaching station with full-real equipment and simulation operation, a national-level high-speed railway train dispatching training base, a national high-speed railway training base, and other advanced international training platforms, which has become the only institute of higher education in the country that allows trains on campus. It has created a good space for cultivating high-end skilled talents, improved the quality of personnel training, and improved the employment competitiveness of graduates, which has been widely recognized by the society.
The institute actively builds an international cooperation and exchange platform, and strengthens cooperation and exchanges with transportation universities and rail transit enterprises along the “Belt and Road”. In cooperation with Beijing Jiaotong University, Korea Railway University, Russia Siberian National Transportation University and other universities, the International Federation of Eurasian Transportation Universities was established and NIRT was elected as the vice-chairman unit. In 2011 and 2015, two international seminars were successfully held in NIRT. In September 2015, the institute participated in the second Sino-Russian Transportation University Presidents Forum and was elected as a member of the Sino-Russian Transportation Principals Alliance Management Committee Unit. In 2018, it became the vice chairman unit of the Sino-Russian Transportation University Presidents Union; in December 2015, the institute hosted Sino-Russian Transportation University Presidents Union - China Rail Transit Technology Talents Training Alliance was established and NIRT was elected as the chairman unit of China Rail Transit Technical Talents Training Alliance; in 2016, the institute and Beijing Jiaotong University successfully held the "China-ASEAN Rail Transit Education and Training Summit Forum and the Results Exhibition”, and established the China-ASEAN Rail Transit Education and Training Alliance, with our institute as a secretariat unit. In 2017-2019, our institute jointly sponsored the "Belt and Road" rail transit education and training school-enterprise cooperation dialogue and the annual meeting of China - ASEAN Rail Transit Education and Training Alliance, which was a complete success for three consecutive years. The construction and operation of the international platform has effectively promoted the cooperation between China's railway higher vocational colleges, railway enterprises and foreign universities, and helped schools and enterprises to go out together.
The institute actively introduces foreign high-quality educational resources, and has conducted Sino-foreign cooperation with the Hastings College in the UK, Kapi’olani Community College in the USA, and Chichester College in the UK. In 2016, the institute cooperated with the National Transportation University of St. Petersburg in Russia to jointly organize two majors: Operation and Management of Railway Transportation and Railway Signal Automatic Control, jointly cultivate international talents for rail transit, serve the construction of Sino-Russian traffic corridors and the development of “Belt and Road”. In 2018, the cooperated major of Operation and Management of Railway Transportation was selected as a high-level demonstration Sino-foreign cooperative education construction project in Jiangsu Province. In 2018, the school signed an educational cooperation exchange agreement with the Mondrian Vocational College in the Netherlands. In 2019, the institute cooperated with the Kuala Lumpur University of Construction in Malaysia to discuss and exchange visits and signed a joint project of cooperation agreement.
In 2011 and 2013, our institute won the Jiangsu Provincial Education International Cooperation and Exchange Advanced Institute. In 2016, our institute won the “Advanced Group of International Students Education in China” in Jiangsu Province. In 2017 and 2018, our institute won the "Top 50" institute of international influence of the national higher vocational colleges. In 2018, our institute won the advanced unit of entry and exit management for international students in Nanjing colleges and universities.
In 2014, the institute began to recruit international students with academic qualifications. At present, there are more than 150 international students from nine countries including Egypt, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and others . In 2018, according to the needs of China's railway going out, the institute and AVIC International declared that the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education's “Excellent Talents Study in Jiangsu Program” was approved, and 18 Egyptian students were enrolled in the order to train localized talents for the 10th of Ramadan Light Railway Project in Egypt. The institute and enterprise jointly recruit students, develop training programs for teaching and management, and actively build Jiangsu education brands. International students have performed well during their school days and have won many awards for off-campus competitions on behalf of our institute, such as the first prize of ROBOTAC Robot International Exchange Competition in 2018, the second prize of the International Trade Skills Competition for International Students in the "Belt and Road" countries in 2018, and the third prize of the first "Cup of Foreign Language Education Press" University Students Intercultural Communication Competence Competition in Jiangsu Province.
