Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is a national key university with the backbone of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is directly under the management of the Ministry of Education and is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Beijing.
北京中医药大学始建于1956年,前身为北京中医学院,是国务院批准最早创办的高等中医药院校。1960年,被中央确定为全国重点高校;1993年,更名为北京中医药大学;1996年,入选国家“211工程”重点建设大学;2000年,与北京针灸骨伤学院合并,组建新的北京中医药大学;2011年,入选国家“985工程优势学科创新平台”建设高校;2017年,中医学、中西医结合、中药学3个学科入选国家“双一流”建设学科名单;2018年,成为教育部新一届高等学校中医学类、中西医结合类专业教学指导委员会主任委员单位。学校现有3个校区,分别为良乡校区、和平街校区和望京校区。
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), founded in 1956, a prestigious university in China, has been well-known for its leading subjects traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Chinese Materia Medica. Since its inception, BUCM has been listed under the Project 211, a project designed for prioritizing development of about 100 colleges and universities and a host of key disciplines for the 21st century. Since 2011, it has been listed under the Project 985, a major decision made by CPC and the State Council on building first-class universities of the international standard at the turn of the century. Since 2017, its three disciplines have been listed under China’s “Double-First Rate” initiative (world-class universities and first-class disciplines), specifically Chinese Medicine, Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica. The university now has three campuses – the Hepingjie Campus, the Wangjing Campus and the Liangxiang Campus.

Boasting of distinctive characteristics and great strengths, BUCM has become an education base for the cultivation of high-level innovative TCM professionals, a model base for the reform of TCM education, a research base for the innovation in TCM knowledge and technology, a healthcare base for the prevention and management of critical conditions and rare cases, a humanity base for the dissemination of Chinese traditional culture, and an international exchange base for the introduction of TCM to the world. It has become a world-renowned TCM university integrating teaching, research and medical care. BUCM has made great contributions to the health undertakings, civilization and social advancement.
建校伊始,学校就成为新中国最早接收外国留学生攻读中医学的高等中医药院校,到目前已为94个国家和地区培养了2万余名中医药专门人才,并先后与31个国家和地区的118所知名大学和研究机构建立合作关系。1996年与英国密德萨斯大学合作设立了我国第一个在国外高校独立颁发医学学士学位项目。率先在世界50强高校中开办中医学专业本科教育,与新加坡南洋理工大学合作开设“中医学-生物学”双学士学位教育。2012年,与日本学校法人兵库医科大学合作建立中医药孔子学院,将中医药课程纳入现代医学教育体系。与西班牙巴塞罗那大学医学院合作开设获欧盟认可的第一个中医学硕士学位项目。开设我国首个全英文授课中医学士学位项目,首个全英文授课西医学习中医的硕士、博士学位项目。
From its inception, the school was the first higher institution of Chinese Medicine in New China to accept foreign students to study Chinese Medicine. So far, it has trained more than 20,000 Chinese Medicine professionals from 94 countries and regions. Importantly, it has established cooperative relationships with 118 well-known universities and research institutions from 31 countries and regions. In 1996, in cooperation with Middlesex University, UK, BUCM became the first university in China that could independently confer a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine in a university abroad. It takes the lead in providing undergraduate education in Traditional Chinese Medicine in the world's top 50 universities, and in cooperation with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, it set up a "Chinese Medicine - Biology" double bachelor’s degree education. In 2012, the Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute was established in Hyogo College of Medicine, Japan, to integrate Chinese Medicine course into the modern medical education system. In cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, Spain, BUCM initiated the first EU-recognized Master's degree program in Chinese Medicine. The school also established the first Chinese medicine bachelor's degree program completely taught in English, and the first Chinese medicine masters and doctoral degree programs designed for students who are already biomedical doctors to learn Chinese medicine.
学校的国际化发展不断探索创新,首创了集医疗、教育、科研与文化传播于一体的“海外中医中心”,为中医药海外发展提供了行之有效的“北中医方案”。先后在德国、澳大利亚、俄罗斯、美国建立中医中心。1991年于德国建立的北京中医药大学魁茨汀中医医院,开创了中国大学在海外办中医特色医院的先例,成为中医药走向世界的典范;俄罗斯中医中心成功取得俄罗斯联邦医疗机构资质,成为俄罗斯第一家被纳入国家医疗保险体系的中医特色医院;澳大利亚中医中心开办针对西医生的中医学历教育;美国中医中心瞄准中医特色及医学前沿,围绕癌症、癫痫、儿科疾病、生殖疾病等成功举办多次高端学术会议,2019年与美国国家儿童医院合作,持续推动传统医学和现代医学的融合与发展。海外中心成为中医药国际化医疗健康服务、教育教学与学术交流的重要平台。
The school continues to explore and innovate its international development, through pioneering the BUCM Program at selected overseas TCM Centers. These Centers combine medical, educational, scientific research and cultural communication, and provide an effective method for the overseas development of Chinese Medicine. It has set up TCM Centers in Germany, Australia, Russia, and the United States. The Koetzting Hospital of Chinese Medicine, established in Germany in 1991, has set a precedent for Chinese universities to run Chinese Medicine specialty hospitals overseas and become a model for Chinese Medicine to the world. The Russian TCM Center has successfully obtained the necessary qualification as a medical institution in the Russian Federation, becoming the first Chinese Medicine specialty hospital in Russia to be included in the national medical insurance system. The Australian TCM Centre provides Chinese Medicine education for Western doctors. The TCM Center of the United States aims at the characteristics of Chinese medicine and the frontiers of medicine, and has successfully held many high-end academic conferences around cancer, epilepsy, pediatric diseases, reproductive diseases, etc. In 2019, it continued to promote the integration and development of traditional and modern medicine in partnership with the National Children's Hospital of the United States. In summary, overseas centers have become an important platform for international medical and health services, education, teaching and academic exchanges in Chinese medicine.
