云南民族大学是一所培养各民族高级专业人才的综合性大学，是教育部、国家民族事务委员会与云南省人民政府共建的省属重点大学。学校坐落于四季如春、风景秀丽的中国昆明，前身是云南民族学院，创建于1951年8月1日，是中华人民共和国最早成立的民族高等院校之一，2003年4月更名为云南民族大学。

经过69年的建设和发展，学校现已成为一所学科门类齐全、办学特色鲜明的综合性大学。涵盖哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、理学、工学、管理学、艺术学、医学11个学科门类，形成了以民族学、社会学、历史学、民族语言文学、东南亚南亚语言文化、民族药、民族艺术、民族体育等为优势特色，文理并重、多学科协调发展的学科与专业格局。拥有2个博士后科研流动站、2个一级学科博士点、117个硕士点和94个本科专业。

学校现有各类学生37000多人，其中本科生21760 人，硕士研究生2343 人，博士研究生26 人，留学生800多人，另有成人本科、专科12000多人。现有教职工1800多人，其中教授189人，副教授347人。学校占地2550亩，校舍建筑面积75万平方米。现有21个学院（部）, 举办了云南民族大学附属中学和云南民族大学附属小学。拥有1个省属研究机构——云南省民族研究所，1个馆藏文物近20000件的民族博物馆；形成了多个有特色、有影响的研究机构：“民族团结进步研究院”、“南亚东南亚辐射中心研究院”、“扶贫开发研究院和扶贫大数据中心”、“云南藏学研究中心”；6个院士专家工作站；1个省级协同创新中心——“云南省2011民族团结进步理论与实践协同创新中心”。学校注重科学研究，在民族学、社会学、历史学等领域，研究成果突出。曾多次获国家级优秀教学成果奖、科研奖和省级教学科研成果奖，部分研究成果曾被中宣部抄报中央政治局常委研阅参考。特别是“直接过渡”、“和平改革”、《民族问题五种丛书》、《中国历史大辞典•民族卷》、《中华文化通史•第三卷》等许多优秀理论成果，不仅为党和国家制定民族政策、解决民族问题提供了重要依据，而且为民族理论的丰富发展作出了重要的历史贡献。

学校注重对外合作与交流。建校以来，80多个国家和地区的元首、政要、专家、学者和国际友人2万多人次到校访问参观。英国女王伊丽莎白二世、美国前国务卿基辛格博士、挪威国王哈拉尔五世、越南胡志明主席等曾访问过云南民族大学，是中国最受外国政要青睐的大学之一。学校是云南最早招收国外留学生、开展对外汉语教学的高校之一，1981年开始招收外国留学生，1992年开始招收国外硕士研究生。先后与美国、挪威、日本、韩国等20多个国家的70多所大学或学术机构建立了合作交流关系。2015年以来，学校主动融入国家“一带一路”倡议，服务云南跨越式发展。在2019年中国大学排名中，云南民族大学全国综合排名第167名，在全国民族院校中排名第三。在最受外国政要青睐的中国大学中排名第四，位居云南省高校第一。

学校始终秉承“团结、进步”的办学精神，以立足边疆、服务边疆、服务民族团结繁荣发展为己任，累计向社会培养输送了10多万名高级人才。云南25个世居少数民族中的第一代学士、硕士、博士、专家、学者，大多是该校培养造就。16个州市129个县，特别是29个民族自治县中的民族干部，大部分毕业于该校。学校已成为中国特别是西南各民族高层次、高素质人才培养的摇篮、研究民族问题和民族关系的重要基地、国家和云南对外开放的重要窗口。1999年、2005年和2009年，学校先后三次被国务院授予“全国民族团结进步模范单位”称号。2016年，获得“全国民族团结进步创建活动示范单位”称号。

Yunnan Minzu University is a comprehensive institution of higher education for all Chinese ethnic groups. It is also a provincial key university co-founded by Department of Education，the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the People’s Government of Yunnan Province. As one of China’s earliest universities intended for all ethnic groups, YMU was founded on August 1, 1951 in Kunming, a beautiful city known for its mild weather all year round. The university, formerly known as Yunnan Institute for the Nationalities, was renamed as Yunnan Minzu University in April 2003.

Over 69 years’ development, YMU has grown into a multi-disciplinary university with multi-leveled and distinctive academic programs, covering 11 disciplines，namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, natural science, engineering, management, art and ethnic medicine, and has formed a pattern of discipline and program development by laying stress on both liberal arts and natural sciences, promoting the development of all disciplines and programs while focusing on the development of some prestigious and distinctive programs concerning ethnology, sociology, ethnic languages and literatures, languages and cultures of Southeast Asia and South Asia. Currently, YMU has 2 post-doctoral research stations, 2 first-level doctoral programs, 117 master’s degree programs, and 94 bachelor’s degree programs.

Now the university has over 37,000 full-time students, among which 21,760 are graduate students, 2,343 are undergraduates, 26 are doctoral students. YMU also has over 800 international students and nearly 12,000 adult students. The number of the university faculty and staff totals above 1800, among which 189 are professors, 347 are associate professors. YMU occupies a land area of more than 2,500 mu (about 160 hectares), with 750,000 square meters of floor area. It has 26 schools (divisions), 1 attached primary school and 1 attached middle school,1 affiliated provincial-level research institute (Yunnan Provincial Institute for Ethnic Studies), 1 ethnic museum housing nearly 20,000 pieces of archives, and several prestigious and distinctive research institutes, such as Yunnan Center for Southeast Asian, South Asian and West Asian Studies, Yunnan Province Research Institute of Ethnic Cultures, and Yunnan Center for Tibetan Studies, Poverty Alleviation and Development Research Institute and Big Data Center, 6 Academician expert workstation, 1 provincial Collaborative Innovation Center-Yunnan Province Ethnic Unity and Progressive Theory and Practical Collaborative Innovation Center in 2011. YMU attaches great importance to scientific research, with advanced research in ethnology, sociology, history and other areas. The university has been granted many awards for teaching and research achievements at provincial and national levels. Some of the research achievements were reported to members of the Politburo Standing Committee.A considerable findings from ethnic theory research, including the “Direct Transition” theory, the “Peaceful Reform” theory, Five Book Series on Ethnic Issues, Ethnics Volume in China’s History Dictionary, the 3rd Volume in China’s Cultural History and so on, not only offer important bases for the Party and government’s stipulation of policies for addressing ethnic problems, but also make great contributions in enriching theories for ethnic issues.

YMU pays close attention to international cooperation and exchanges. The university has received more than 20,000 visitors from over 80 countries or regions, including Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Dr. Henry Alfred Kissinger, former Secretary of State of the United States of America, King Harold V of the Kingdom of Norway, and Chairman Ho Chi Minh of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. As one of the earliest institutions in Yunnan that recruit international students and teach Chinese as a foreign language, YMU began recruiting international students in 1981, graduate students in 1992, and has established cooperation and exchange relations with more than 70 universities or research institutions from over 20 countries including the United States of America, the Kingdom of Norway, Japan, and South Korea etc. Since 2015, YMU has actively participated in ‘One Belt One Road’ Initiative and served Yunnan for its leap-forward development. In 2019, YMU was ranked the 167th among all the national comprehensive universities in China, the 3rd among the Chinese ethnic higher learning institutions, and the 4th of the Chinese universities most favored by foreign politicians, the only university in Yunnan Province which has gained this reputation.

  The vision of YMU is “solidarity and progress”, the motto is “truth seeking and morality promoting, knowledge disseminating and virtue developing,” and the mission is “taking roots in the border area, and serving people in the border area, contributing to ethnic unity and prosperity.” The university alumni have been more than 100,000 now, including most of the first-generation bachelors, masters, doctors, experts and scholars of the 25 indigenous ethnic minorities in Yunnan, as well as the majority of government leaders from ethnic minorities in the 129 counties (especially in the 29 autonomous counties) of the 16 prefectures or cities of Yunnan Province. The university has grown into the cradle of high-level and top-quality professionals for ethnic regions all over the country especially in Southwestern China, an important base for ethnic studies as well as a window of Yunnan to the outside world. In 1999, 2005 and 2009, YMU was three times awarded the honor of “National Model Institution of Ethnic Unity and Progress” by the State Council.

Time glides fast away and flowers in Spring yield fruits in Autumn. Yunnan Minzu University is furthering its educational orientations of "ethnic-diversity", "borderland-rooting", and "internationalization". The University will pay closer attention to its connotative construction, explore unremittingly to shape its modern institutional system, and work in all endeavors to establish bases for Ethnic Minority Talents Cultivation, Ethnic Culture Inheritance, and Ethnic Theory and Policy Studies. YMU will march forward to a high-level university for all ethnic groups with distinctive features and international reputations by taking roots in Yunnan, orienting to the entire country, and working with its partners from Southeast and South Asia and beyond.
