Chengdu University was officially established with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China in 1978, but with the history of school running for one hundred years. It is a university jointly established by Sichuan Province and Chengdu City, and a key comprehensive university supported by Chengdu, a national central city. It is the site of the Athletes’ Village for the 2021 Chengdu FIFU World University Games.
Chengdu University has implemented three development strategies, namely "talent strategy, distinctiveness strategy and internationalization strategy", and focuses on the talent training characteristics of "school-city integration, open cooperation and regional application". Up to now, the university has trained more than 150,000 various talents for national economic and social development.
Focusing on the core qualities of high-caliber and applied talents, science and technology development, and industrial progress, Chengdu University has planned scientifically to set up disciplines and specialties, and has been constantly promoting the integration of disciplines and specialties. At present, there are 10 disciplines and 62 undergraduate specialties in Arts, Literature, Management, Education, Economics, Law, Engineering, Medicine, Science and Agriculture. currently.of which there are 2 first-class disciplines to confer the master's degree and 7 categories for professional degrees. The Pharmacy was selected as China's high-level discipline by the Alumni Association in 2019, ranking the second in the province; A total of 13 specialties, including Tourism Management, were selected as national and provincial first-class majors in the "Double Ten Thousand Plan" in 2019.
Chengdu University currently has more than 24,000 full-time students (including 1,394 graduate students and 694 international students). It has passed the national engineering education accreditation for the specialties of Food Science and Engineering, Automation, and Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation. The university has one national first-class specialty in the "Double Ten Thousand Plan", 12 provincial first-class specialties, 3 provincial pilot specialties in the Program for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers (PETOE), and 4 application-oriented demonstration specialties; 120 MOE university-industry collaborative education programs, 221 undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training programs, 2 high-quality resource sharing courses, 11 high-quality online open courses, 7 innovation and entrepreneurship education demonstration courses, 9 application-oriented demonstration courses and 3 first-class courses.
Chengdu University has over 30 doctoral supervisors and nearly 1,500 full-time teachers, including over 200 with senior titles, over 500 with sub-senior titles and nearly 700 with doctoral degrees. Fan Daiming, the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is specially appointed as the honorary president of the university.
There are over 20 faculty members who are winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Changjiang Scholars, national candidates of the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, or experts entitled to special government allowance from the State Council, over 50 members who are outstanding scientists of the "Tianfu Ten Thousand Talents Program", academic and technical leaders in Sichuan, excellent experts with outstanding contributions in Sichuan, or experts of the Sichuan "1000 Talents Program", and over 140 distinguished experts who are Nobel Prize winners, academicians, Changjiang scholars, high-end foreign experts or research fellows (associate research fellows).
The university focuses on the planning of major national economic and social development strategies, especially in the regions, to adapt to regional industrial clusters, key pillar industries and emerging industries, and to continuously improve the level of scientific research services and support capabilities. At present, there are more than 1,200 scientific researchers and 74 scientific research platforms at all levels, including International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases of the Ministry of Science and Technology, State and Regional Research Center of the Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Engineering Technology Research Center of Sichuan Province, Engineering Laboratory of Sichuan Province and 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Sichuan Province.
In the past five years, it has won 61 scientific research awards at the provincial/ministerial and higher levels. The program of "Very High Cycle Fatigue Crack Initiation Mechanism and Life Prediction" undertaken by experts in Chengdu University was awarded the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2018. The "Key Technologies and Industrialization for Production of Acarbose Raw Materials and Preparations" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2014. A Study of Physical Object-Referring Terms in the Three Rites was selected for the National Achievements Library of Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2015. Moreover, it has obtained nearly 1,200 authorized patents. In 2019, it published 408 papers listed in SCI, ranking 6th in Sichuan, 166th in China and 823rd in the world in the latest Nature Index 2020 Annual Tables. A number of papers have been included in the highly cited papers of ESI. It has published articles in international top academic journals such as Nature Microbiology, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and Angewandte Chemie, with a total citation frequency of over 11,000 times. Professor Wang Qingyuan has been selected in the list of "highly cited scholars" in China for six consecutive years since 2014.
The University will incorporate the "high-level implementation of the first-class international projects" into the "six first-class" development goals in the next five years, and implement the project that one college will be assigned with one world-class discipline (university). It has signed memorandums of cooperation with 119 universities from 34 countries and regions, including 26 world-renowned universities, 10 world-renowned young universities and 37 international sister city universities of Chengdu.
In 2020, there are 694 international students (including 494 degree students, 139 postgraduates, 355 undergraduates, and 200 short-term non-degree students). The University has launched five Sino-foreign cooperative projects at the undergraduate and diploma levels and trained a total of 2,163 students, with 924 students studying in the projects. It has carried out 40 multi-level overseas joint training programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels and 42 overseas inter-university exchange programs, with a total of nearly 1,000 students.
The University has set up two overseas alumni societies in Thailand and New Zealand respectively. It has held the international exchange week for five consecutive years and holds about six international conferences every year. It has attracted nearly 600 foreign experts and invited Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand as an Honorary Professor. Thai special expert Chaphiporn Kiatkachatharn was awarded the "Chinese Government's Friendship Award", the highest honor granted to foreign experts by the Chinese government. The Sichuan Provincial Research Institute of Thai Studies was included in the list of National and Regional Research Centers Registered in the Ministry of Education. The University has facilitated the establishment of international sister-city relations between Chengdu and Chiang Mai, Thailand and Hamilton, New Zealand. It has taken the lead in establishing the "Chengdu International Sister Cities Higher Education Institutions Alliance" and serves as the Secretariat of the Alliance and the first Executive Chairman Unit.
The University is located in Chengdu, a central city in China. Chengdu connects the "west triangle" new pattern of higher education in China, with obvious location advantages. The University has a beautiful environment because it is adjacent to the Qinglonghu Wetland Park, which covers an area of more than 30,000 mu; it enjoys the convenient transportation thanks to Chengdu University Station of he Metro Line 4. The University covers a construction area of 738,300 square meters, of which 335,400 square meters are used for teaching, scientific research and administrative offices. The total value of teaching and research equipment amounts up to RMB 256 million. The library covers an area of 48,000 square meters and has more than 5,000 reading seats, with a total collection of 2.2668 million paper books and more than 40,000 electronic periodicals.
