ABOUT GZNU
Abiding by the guidance of "Patriotism, Contribution, Dedication, and Cultivation" and the university motto "Contemplation, Honesty, Erudition, Creativity", Guizhou Normal University (GZNU) is now a university specialized in teacher's education. 260 thousands of graduates have dedicated their wisdom and energy to the educational cause and become the backbone in their career, widely appreciated throughout the university's remarkable history of both hardships and achievements.
Founded in 1941, the university was originally named as National Guiyang Teachers' College, and renamed as Guiyang Teachers' College in 1950. In 1985, it was formally entitled Guizhou Normal University and honored as one of the provincial key universities in 1996. The year 2004 marked a new stage in the university's development when the Provincial Vocational College of Technology was merged with it. GZNU is in the name list of the Program of Partner Assistance with Western Universities of Ministry of Education, and has set up the partner-assistance relationship with Xiamen University in 2006. In 2013, it was approved to grant Ph.D. by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, and two years later, honored as a university co-constructed by the Ministry of Education of P.R.China and Guizhou Province. From the year of 2016, GZNU started the in-depth cooperation and the synergy innovation with Lanzhou University with mutual strategic coopertion agreements reached. And in the following year, the university successfully became the first and currently the only institution in Guizhou Province entering into the ‘Overseas Expertise Introduction Project for Discipline Innovation’ implemented by China’s Ministry of Edcuation and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.
With a total area of 187hectares, the 3 campuses of GZNU: Baoshan Campus, Baiyun Campus and Huaxi Campus all located in Guiyang, the capital city of Southwest China’s Guizhou province, which also enjoys the reputation of “China's best summer resort” with its pleasant climate and abundant natural resources.
Covering 11 disciplines of Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Management and Arts, GZNU comprises 24 Schools, the School of Further Education and an Independent College (Qiushi College) and has more than 36,000 full-time students and a faculty team of over 2,600 members in total.
The comprehensive disciplinary strength of GZNU puts it at the forefront of the province’s advanced teaching institutions, and has been further enhanced with the number of majors increasing, by the year of 2018, the university offers 79 different undergraduate majors, 6 Doctoral and 22 Master’s degree programs for first-level disciplines (covering 32 and 107 degree programs for second-level disciplines respectively), 6 independent and 9 specialized Master’s degree programs for second-level disciplines. The universty also enjoys the privilege of recommending excellent fresh undergraduates to pursue their graduate education without examinations.
We are proud of 1 national first-class discipline, 7 National Undergraduate Featured Specialties, 5 National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Projects of Undergraduate Specialties, 2 Reform Projects of Cultivating Teachers and 4 Projects of Cultivating Middle School Teachers of Excellence by Ministry of Education.
GZNU attaches great importance to its academic research. Since 2011, we have undertaken 1 national key R&D project, 355 national research projects and over 980 provincial research projects. Renowned for the rich scientific resources, our university houses 4 National Platforms (for students’ off-campus practice, further education of professionals, teachers’ training, social sports instructors’training), 2 National Demonstration Centers (for experiment teaching, and comprehensive experiment and training of education), 1 State Key Lab Incubation Base for Karst Mountain Ecology Environment of Guizhou Province, 1 State Engineering Technology Institute for Karst Desertification Control, 1 National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Key Information Technology and Application of Karst Region, 1 National Science and Technology Park, 1 Model Base for Micro and Small Businesses Entrepreneurship and Innovation, 1 National Makerspace, 1 Overseas Expertise Introduction Center for Discipline Innovation of China’s Ministry of Edcuation as well as boasts 1 Special Talents Team for Scientific and Technological Innovation of Ministry of Education of P.R.China.
To promote our global joint researches, share achievements and experiences, increasing international conferences were held by Guizhou Normal University over recent years: Frontiers in Radio Astronomy and FAST Early Sciences Symposium(2015), Sino-Japanese International Forum on Yangming Theory(2016),Mini Symposium on Bio-medical Big Data(2017)to name a few.
GZNU is enthusiastically to expand our international cooperation with partners from all over the world and has made it a strategic priority in its development planning to go global. We have now established friendly partnerships with universities, colleges and institutions in the USA, Portugal, Russia, Australia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia to name a few. Long-term joint exchange programs for training students and teachers have already carried out with quite a few universities.
We also received international students from countries like the USA, Germany, Australia, Pakistan, Kyrghyzstan, Laos, Singapore, Eritrea, Ghana etc. to study in Chinese Language Programs or other degree schemes with Chinese Government Scholarship, Provincial Scholarship or President Scholarship being offered to part of them.
GZNU actively encouraged a global vision of the students and teachers by inviting foreign experts to give lectures in campuses every year, and sending GZNU teachers abroad for teaching programs or academic visits as a result of intercollegiate friendly relationships.
China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, held in Guiyang, is another important international activity supported by GZNU, offering us much more opportunities for global collaboration and mobility.
To bring in advanced ideas and methods of education and management, we have jointly launched Higher National Diploma (HND) program with Scottish Qualifications Authority and International General Education Courses with Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange. We have also established Chinese Language Center with I.Y. Yakovlev Chuvash State Pedagogical University, Russia.
