Guangxi University, established in 1928, is the most time-honored regional comprehensive university and the only Project 211 National Key University in Guangxi. It is also a co-construction university by Guangxi Province and the national Ministry of Education.
It has been selected as a construction university within "the National Plan to Promote the Comprehensive Strength of Midwest Colleges and Universities". At present, Guangxi University has 27 colleges covering 11 major disciplines (philosophy, economics, law, liberal arts, sciences, engineering, agriculture, management, education, medicine and art) including 10 post-doctoral research stations, 58 Ph.D. programs, 211 graduate programs and 98 undergraduate programs.
The university covers an area of over 313 hectares and a floor space of 1,600,000 square meters. Its library possesses a total collection of 7.55 million volumes of books, 3.78 million digital books, over 4,000 Chinese and foreign paper periodicals and 35,000 electronic periodicals. As the digitized library has been built at a large scale, it functions as both an academic library and an information system that provides abundant paper and digital literature resources.
As one of the 66 universities in China certified by the Ministry of Education to recruit international students, it started to accept international students in 1961. In 2017, Guangxi University recruited 2,050 international students from 70 regions and countries. While the scale of international students is expanding, the university has signed agreements of cooperation and exchange with 220 higher education institutions from 40 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Canada, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and so on. At the same time, the university has invited large numbers of international experts and scholars to teach, lecture and conduct research here.
In December 2006, Guangxi University and Suan Dusit University co-founded the Confucius Institute in Suphanburi, Thailand.
